THE INTERNET
The internet is a very useful resource in terms of film and video, films can not only be bought online, but also created and shown to a global audience through the use of video sharing communities like Vimeo or YouTube. With the internet, access to all types and genres of film from all over the world has become unlimited and the internet as a whole has made world cinema more available, not least with Japanese anime. Anyone with an internet connection is able to watch film trailers belonging to countries different to theirs and by using online programmes such as Netflix and other online streaming websites and of course the global community that is YouTube, foreign language films are able to be viewed directly from home, without having to attend a specialist cinema or hope for it to be released in their country on DVD, that being said the internet has also, through the use of websites such as EBay, Amazon, LoveFilm, iTunes and Play.com, enables users worldwide to purchase world cinema films that interest them and have them shipped over, or in the case of iTunes and LoveFilm, purchased and downloaded right there and then for their own personal collection thus making for an essentially transnational experience.
ANIME
The Japanese Anime genre as a whole has used various techniques in order to reach its audiences worldwide. Films from Japan’s own, Studio Ghibli, Inc. such as Spirited Away (2001) and Ponyo (2008) proving so popular with worldwide audiences, that Disney decided to fund distribution of them globally in cinemas, dubbing them over in English using American actors. Although most if not all anime films are available with English subtitles it could be argued that the fact that they have been distributed worldwide via American distributors makes them examples of Transnational cinema.
