CLOUD ATLAS (2013)
Cloud Atlas is a fantasy sci-fi film, produced and directed by German director Tom Twyker and Polish/American directors The Wachowski’s of Matrix fame. The synopsis for the film describes it as “An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution”.
The film was adapted from UK author David Mitchell’s book of the same name and features multiple storylines set in different time periods and across various different countries. Cloud Atlas is transnational in a somewhat similar way to that of both Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and Babel (2006) in that it received funding and was produced and distributed by people and companies of multiple nationalities ranging from the US and Germany all the way to Singapore and Hong Kong. Production for the film began in German studio, Studio Babelsberg and filming was carried out all over Germany, England, Spain and Scotland. Like Babel before it, Cloud Atlas contains an international cast of actors Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon from the USA, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent and James D’Arcy from the UK, South Korean actress Doona Bae, Nigerian Australian actor Hugo Weaving and Chinese Actress Zhou Xun. Though set in various locations around the world, the films transnationality comes primarily not from its story, but from its various production and behind the scenes crew.
